Jones spurns Heat for Mavs deal

Derrick Jones Jr. turned down an opportunity to return to the Miami Heat and signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks instead, NBA insider Marc Stein reported.

Stein said that Jones had contemplated going back to the Heat, where he played from 2018 to 2020, on a veteran minimum deal. However, he ultimately picked the Mavericks, who also offered him the same amount of money.

Jones was a key contributor for the Heat during their run to the NBA Finals in 2020. He also won the Slam Dunk Contest that year with his incredible aerial display. He averaged 8.9 points and 4.2 rebounds in his final season with the Heat.

Jones left the Heat last summer and joined the Chicago Bulls on a two-year, $6.56 million contract. He did not have a good season with the Bulls, as he posted only 6.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 58 games. He also missed some games due to injuries.

Jones decided to opt out of his $3.3 million player option with the Bulls for the 2023-24 season and test free agency. He landed with the Mavericks, who are looking to upgrade their defense and athleticism around their star players Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis.

Jones could give the Mavericks some spark and depth on the wing with his explosive dunks and his defensive skills.
